Synexus is a company dedicated to conducting clinical studies and have been investigating the effectiveness of new medicines and treatments for more than 20 years. We provide a friendly, relaxed environment where you have the chance to help shape the future of health for yourself and for others. Our team includes sub-investigators, research nurses & coordinators, research assistants, data compliance coordinator, recruitment specialists, and other research support staff. With ample visitor parking and golf cart accessibility, we are committed to participant safety and look forward to welcoming you in the near future.
Transportation may be provided if needed to office visits.
Synexus – The Villages site has been operational since 2014, formerly known as Compass Research, and occupies nearly 12,000 sq. ft. of dedicated research space, including 14 exam rooms, a 4-seat infusion suite, onsite research pharmacy & laboratory facilities, and dedicated monitoring space with wifi & copier access.
Just 9 miles from I-75, the site is 67 miles via FL Turnpike N from the Orlando International Airport (ORL) and 87 miles via I-75 N from the Tampa Internal Airport (TPA). Located in the heart of north-central Florida, The Villages – Florida’s Friendliest Active Adult 55+ Retirement Community, is considered one of America’s premier master-planned Active Adult Communities (AAC).
Angela Okolie, MD
Principal Investigator
Dr. Okolie graduated from medical school in Ghana in 2005 and initially worked as a general practitioner. In 2009, she moved to the United States where she pursued further specialization. She became board certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine, demonstrating her commitment to providing comprehensive care in these areas. She has a strong background as a Hospitalist, having spent the previous 10 years in that role. Additionally, she has served as the Medical Director for a hospital’s home care agency and is the current medical director here at Synexus Clinical Research, The Villages.
Dr. Okolie is known for her patient-focused approach and takes pride in providing exceptional oversight in multiphasic studies. She has experience in various therapeutic areas, including Vaccines, Neuro/Alzheimer’s, and General Medicine. Her diverse experience allows her to provide comprehensive care to her patients. In addition, Dr. Okolie hails from Nigeria, bringing a unique perspective and cultural understanding to her practice. Her diverse background allows her to connect with patients from various cultural backgrounds and provide personalized care that considers their individual needs and preferences.
With over 20 years of medical experience, Dr. Okolie brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her practice. Her years of practice as a general practitioner, followed by her specialization in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine, have equipped her with a well-rounded understanding of various medical conditions and treatment approaches. This extensive experience allows her to provide high-quality care to her patients.
Dr. Cortes, MD, MBA
Principal Investigator
Dr. Luis Cortes joined Synexus in 2024. Dr. Cortes is a research physician and obtained a doctorate degree in medicine from the University of Illinois in 2002. Dr. Cortes has experience in Anesthesiology and Critical care. He’s originally from Puerto Rico and moved to Fl in 2007 after completing residency training in Chicago, IL. He’s an avid golfer, enjoys traveling and boating.
Elisa Swieboda, MSN, APRN, AGPC-C, SR. Nurse Practitioner
Principal Investigator
Elisa is an APNR and obtained her Master’s degree in Adult and Geriatric Health from Walden University in 2020 and has been a BSN RN since 2004. Mrs. Swieboda has experience in clinical research, primary care, neurological disorders and Interventional Radiology. She loves animals, nature and art. Originally from New York she moved to Fl in 2000. Elisa enjoys traveling with her husband and exploring the country.
